intaka island

At the heart of Century City lies Intaka Island, a 16-hectare wetland conservation reserve. Encircled by water and protected by the canal system at Century City, Intaka Island provides a green lung for Century City and a safe haven for thousands of indigenous plants and an increasing array of bird life. More than 120 bird species have been identified on Intaka Island! Dozens of breeding pairs of water birds can be seen in the heronry, which you can observe from the comfort of a hide at Cell Three.

Intaka Island is made up of two sections of approximately 8 hectares each. One half comprises environmentally sensitive ephemeral pans that preserve the natural habitat while the other half constitutes a reconstructed working wetland that serves to cleanse and polish the water pumped through the 8km of completed canals at Century City.

Century City and Intaka Island are being hailed as a prime example of how the built and natural environments can co-exist in harmony.

Intaka Island is open to the public seven days a week from 8am until 5pm. A series of paths lead to hides designed for bird-watching. A nominal entry fee is charged.
