The Century-City-Feed-A-Family initiative, a joint venture of the Century City Property Owners’ Association (CCPOA), Rabie Property Group and Century City Conference Centre and Hotel, delivered the first food hampers to the Joe Slovo community in Milnerton on 30 April.

Since then, 300 hampers were delivered on Tuesday, 5 May and another 450 hampers are destined for the families in need on Friday, 8 May.  A total of 1 150 families or 4 600 received food hampers in the first two weeks.

“We are receiving fantastic support from the community leaders and other members of the community” says Glyn Taylor, Joint CEO of Century City Conference Centre and Hotel. “Our biggest job behind the scenes, prior to even loading a vehicle for a delivery, is to make sure that the families who need the hampers are registered on the Department of Social Development’s database.  This database ensures that we reach the correct people.  Since the SA Red Cross delivers the hampers to each home, the addresses also need to be mapped out ahead of time.”

There has been an appeal for funding towards this initiative and to date, R985 000 has been donated, almost 50% of the R2-million target.  The goal is to supply 30kg food hampers to 5 000 families or 20 000 people.  Such a hamper can last up to four weeks.

“We would like to thank each person who has donated for their incredible generosity and for taking the time to reach out to those in need via our initiative.” continues Taylor.  “With the donations received thus far, we will be able to deliver food hampers to 2 463 families.”

“It would be wonderful if we could exceed our target, as then we would be able to feed more families, but initially, we have set out to reach at least 1 000 families per week.”

Local celebrities have also become involved in the donation drive, with Ryan O’Connor, from Heart FM recording a video for his 28 500 followers on Facebook from the Century City Conference Centre, where the hampers are packed.  This week, former South African international cricketer and local Cape Cobra star, JP Duminy, also recorded a video at the Conference Centre, appealing to his 652 000 Instagram followers for donations.

With the Century City Conference Centre in complete control of the procurement of the food hamper ingredients from their suppliers at the lowest prices, the Century City Feed-A-Family initiative needs funding. Each hamper costs R400. With no management fees or packing and delivering charges applicable, every Rand contributed will go towards purchasing foodstuffs for the community via Century City Feed-A-Family.

Whether big or small: every contribution helps, as accumulatively, it makes a huge difference in the life of a family in need.
